Which one, and whether either
Which is appropriate — or whether either is — depends on how much tooth structure remains, the condition of the gum and your bite.
Shaving down a healthy tooth only for appearance is not the right approach; we assess the options together at the examination.
How many appointments
The number of appointments and the steps of treatment depend on your situation; the dentist assesses them during the examination.
Colour and shape
These are chosen together with you before the work begins. What is achievable differs from person to person and is decided at the examination, not in advance.
A crown or veneer does not remove the need for daily cleaning. The gum line around them still needs brushing and interdental cleaning.
- The crown presses at one spot or causes a sore — do not file it down yourself; adjustment is done at the clinic
- When you bite, it feels as if the crown “touches first” (the bite may have been left high)
- The crown has become loose or has come off
- Under the crown, there is pain, an odour or gum swelling
If you have any of the following, call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department — do not wait for a message reply:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Swelling spreading towards the eye, neck or chest
- Swelling with a high fever, shivering
- Altered consciousness or fainting
- Suspected jaw fracture, or loss of consciousness after a head injury
- Bleeding that does not stop despite repeated pressure or that rapidly fills your mouth
