Pain stopping is not the same as healing
An infected tooth can stop hurting while the infection continues. If your pain went away on its own, that is still a reason to be examined.
If treatment has been started, do not stop it halfway because the pain has gone. A root canal treatment left unfinished can lead to the loss of the tooth; a treatment that has been started must be completed.
During treatment
The method and stages of treatment vary depending on your situation; the dentist assesses them during the examination.
After treatment
The following are outside the expected course and mean you should call the clinic:
- Pain gets steadily worse instead of easing
- Swelling appears in the face or gum
- You develop a fever
- The temporary filling falls out
- Biting on the tooth stays unbearable for more than a few days
If you have any of the following, call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department — do not wait for a message reply:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Swelling spreading towards the eye, neck or chest
- Swelling with a high fever, shivering
- Altered consciousness or fainting
- Suspected jaw fracture, or loss of consciousness after a head injury
- Bleeding that does not stop despite repeated pressure or that rapidly fills your mouth
General dentistry
Fillings, scaling, extractions and paediatric dental care are part of general dentistry. Whether any treatment is needed can only be decided after an examination.
